The artwork "A View from Within" is a composition depicting a beautiful scene along the shores of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota with Split Rock Lighthouse in the background. The original artwork and proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure by artist Randall J. Peterson. The prints and note cards were donated by ECM Publishers, Inc.

The original artwork of "A View from Within" is from a pen and ink drawing created in the style of pointillism. It was completed on September 16, 2007. It was an inspiration from one day in August 2007 in Minneapolis when I attended the closing ceremonies for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day walk. As all the participants were walking to the finish, it was amazing to see so many people with so much support and enthusiasm. It was quite emotional watching the survivors go by, and seeing the small children hugging their mothers as they were finishing the race. My wife (a three year survivor) and my daughter were participants in the event.

Welcome to the Web site and the studio of Randall Peterson Designs, Inc.

In this site you will be introduced to the fine art of pointillism. Throughout this site, you will see my collection of artwork I have created of various lighthouses in North America as well as castles and bridges.

I have also done a number of commissioned drawings of the most notable inns and structures of historic significance found in North America. I discovered that these lovely structures lend themselves wonderfully to my style of artwork, evoking images that are at once lavish and refined.

The nostalgia and romance associated with favorite inns and Bed and Breakfasts have captivated my imagination, much like my lighthouse artwork. These are places where we can explore the past, get away from the day-to-day, and make our own memories. I try to convey both the beauty and steadfastness of historic structures in my black and white renderings.

Adventures & Reflections of an Artist
Randall J. Peterson

"Adventures & Reflections of an Artist" is a human interest story about Minnesota artist Randall J. Peterson and his love for historic structures. His hope is to rekindle the fond memories that people may have had at a lighthouse, bridge or a historic structure. He also hopes to bring awareness and help preserve these structures through a collection of artwork in the style of pointillism. This book highlights and educates you in the artwork style of pointillism and includes many pieces of artwork from his collection.

"Of the many places Randall takes you, I happen to live near the Thousand Islands region and have visited Boldt Castle on several occasions. Randall has captured its beauty and history in a way that returns those summer memories. His adventures with pointillism lead you through the processes, adding his knowledge and research through his storytelling. The book is wonderful. It's got something for everyone to enjoy."

"This is a delightful read. But, on a deeper level, this is a gift of large proportions. Randall Peterson's odyssey gives us a rare intimate snapshot into the life and development of an artist and his art. Personally, I'm continually surprised that every new work of art he produces is my favorite! It's a joy to wonder what his work will be like next year or in five years."

The style and technique used in my drawings is called pointillism or stippling. The pointillism technique is when dots are grouped together to form an image. The closer the dots are together, the darker the tones. The farther apart the dots are, the lighter the tones. Pointillism was first introduced in the 1880's, in the wake of impressionism, by the French artist Georges Pierre Seurat.
